In Israel a state ceremony is held in Warsaw Ghetto Square in Yad Vashem – the official Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem – after sundown on the eve of Yom HaShoah. ![]() The Yom HaShoah UK group states its aims are to ensure greater awareness of Yom HaShoah as the annual Jewish remembrance day for victims of the Holocaust, promote understanding of its importance and encourage its observance by present and future generations of the UK Jewish community, and emphasise the theme of “remembering the past, honouring the memory, shaping the future”. As much significance is placed on the Jewish resistance as remembering the approximately six million Jewish victims of the mass genocide. The literal translation of Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laG’vurah is “Holocaust and heroism remembrance day”. In 1951, the Knesset found a compromise and declared the 27th of Nisan to be the first official Yom HaShoah. However, this date often clashed with Passover, which was unsatisfactory to Orthodox Jews. Today, and every day, we vow, ‘Never again,’ and promise to remain vigilant against antisemitism and all forms of hatred, wherever and whenever they occur.Secular Israeli Zionists suggested the date of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising – a significant rebellion by Jewish prisoners in Poland – which started on 19 April, 1943. “On this sombre day, I invite all Canadians to take time to remember the victims of the Holocaust, and honour its survivors. We will also honour and pay tribute to the resilience of the survivors, and recognize those who risked their lives to save others. “At sunset today, we will join Jewish communities and others in Canada and around the world to remember the six million innocent Jewish children, women, and men who were systematically murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
